Priority Alert – Indian Ocean Region
War risk/Physical damage
Details
Narrative:
An OFAC-sanctioned, Botswana-flagged tanker was fired upon and damaged by U.S. forces while underway in the Arabian/Persian Gulf and heading towards Kharg Island, Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the tanker had “ignored repeated warnings, failing to comply with directions from U.S. forces multiple times over a 24-hour period.” Ambrey observed video footage showing a hellfire missile impacting the vessel’s engine room, disabling the vessel. No casualties among the tanker’s crew were reported. Based on AIS data, the tanker was last observed anchored 21 NM north-east of Khor Fakkan, United Arab Emirates, at 12:33 UTC on 26 May. The vessel had been sanctioned by OFAC due to its links with Sea Services Providers NV.
ADVICE: Ambrey advises merchant vessels to monitor Notice to Mariners broadcasts and contact U.S. naval forces on VHF Channel 16 when operating in the Gulf of Oman and during Strait of Hormuz approaches. Ambrey also advises that merchant vessels calling Iranian ports adopt a non-confrontational approach, acknowledging radio communications and permitting inspections when instructed. In order to mitigate the risk of miscommunication/misunderstanding, it is advised to manage crew deck movements and designate safe muster points for the crew.
