The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an airstrike on the port of Latakia, Syria. Ambrey observed video footage and imagery which showed multiple explosions and fires at both the port’s container terminal and the military port. Israel-affiliated media stated that the strikes “targeted Syrian naval assets” which belonged to the fallen Assad regime. Following the capture of Damascus by anti-Assad rebel groups, the IDF has been conducting air and missile strikes on weapons, facilities and other military assets of the Syrian Arab Army to prevent them from being captured by “hostile forces.” Satellite imagery from 9 December 2024 and AIS data did not show any merchant vessels in the port at the time of the attack. At the time of writing, no casualties had been reported in Latakia.
ADVICE: Vessels are advised to stay clear of Syrian territorial waters.
