3. Euroseas announces 18-month charter contract for its feeder containership, EM Spetses. Euroseas, an owner and operator of container carrier vessels and provider of seaborne transportation for containerized cargoes, announced today a new time charter contract for its 1,740 feeder containership, EM Spetses, for a minimum period of 18 to a maximum period of 20 months at the option of the charterer, at a gross daily rate of $18,100. The charter for EM Spetses will commence in early August 2024, upon the completion of its current charter.

4. Spain detains cargo ship over fuel spill near Ceuta. Spanish authorities have detained a German-operated cargo ship for causing a spill during a refuelling operation near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Spain’s Merchant Fleet said on Monday.
The Antigua & Barbuda-flagged Tony Stark ship cannot leave the port on Africa’s north coast until the owners pay bail of 120,000 euros ($130,524), it added.

5. U.S. wholesale natural gas spot prices fell to record lows in first half 2024. The average monthly wholesale spot natural gas price at the U.S. benchmark Henry Hub fell by 20% to $2.56 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) between January and June of this year, according to data from Refinitiv Eikon. In January, the Henry Hub price averaged $3.18/MMBtu, then dropped to $1.49/MMBtu in March, marking the lowest average monthly inflation-adjusted price since at least 1997. In addition, prices from February through April 2024 were the lowest ever recorded for these months.

9. ‘Absolute Disgrace’: Israeli Authorities Detain Cargo Ship Over Severe Inhuman Conditions. The Palau-flagged cargo vessel Serafina has been detained by Israeli maritime authorities after an inspection revealed severe inhuman conditions on board.
ITF Inspector Assaf Hadar reported finding a lack of employment contracts, improper food storage, bug infestations, and broken toilets, describing the situation as the worst he has encountered in his four years of inspecting ships in Israel.

10. Container ship fleet sees fastest growth in 15 years. Since the beginning of the year, the capacity of the container ship fleet has increased by 1.6 million TEUs.
“Compared to one year ago, the capacity has risen 11% to 29.5 million TEUs, the fastest fleet growth in 15 years,” mentioned Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO.
