2. Seafarers must not be made scapegoats in criminal investigations without evidence, says InterManager. The threat of prosecution from a criminal investigation should never be held against an individual seafarer where there is no evidence against them, according to InterManager.

InterManager is the only organisation dedicated to representing the ship management industry, and its Secretary General Capt Kuba Szymanski said it was unacceptable that seafarers should be criminalised even when not found personally responsible as part of an investigation.

3. US urges China to dissuade Iran from closing Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday called on China to encourage Iran to not shut down the Strait of Hormuz after Washington carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Rubio’s comments on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo” show came after Iran’s Press TV reported that the Iranian parliament approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of global oil and gas flows.

4. EIA: U.S. primary energy production, consumption, and exports increased in 2024. The United States continued to produce more energy than it consumed in 2024. This surplus energy production helped energy exports grow to a record high 30.9 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) in 2024, up 4% from 2023. Energy imports stayed flat at 21.7 quads in 2024, meaning the United States exported 9.3 quads more energy than it imported, the highest net exports in our records, which date back to 1949.

5. Oil Sinks After Iran Targets U.S. Base—Not Tankers. Oil prices settled down more than 7% on Monday, losing more than $5 a barrel after Iran took no action to disrupt oil and gas tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, but instead attacked a U.S. military base in Qatar in retaliation for U.S. attacks on its nuclear facilities.

6. Middle East Conflict Drives Spike in War Risk Insurance Costs.  U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and Tehran’s reprisals have doubled the price of insuring shipments to the Middle East and the Gulf in the last week, insurance sources said on Monday.

9. Russian Nuclear Icebreakers Clear Path For First LNG Delivery of the Year to Asia via Arctic. Russia’s Yamal LNG project has dispatched the first gas carrier in the direction of Asia via the Northern Sea Route. Two nuclear icebreakers, Yamal and Vaygach, set off ahead of Georgiy Ushakov to scout ahead and escort the LNG vessel. Georgiy Ushakov has reached the East Siberian Sea and is currently following behind nuclear icebreaker Yamal as the two ships encounter thicker remaining winter sea ice.

10. IMO Maritime Safety Committee tackles busy agenda.

The 110th session of the Maritime Safety Committee is taking place from 18 to 27 June, with a busy agenda.IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez opened the meeting by highlighting recent maritime casualties as a stark reminder of IMO’s critical role in ensuring safety, security, and environmental protection of shipping, and the importance of implementing IMO regulations.
