2. Chemical tanker attacked off Nigeria. A Marshall Islands-flagged chemical tanker was boarded by four individuals some 100 nautical miles southwest of Brass, Nigeria, according to UK maritime security specialists Ambrey.

The individuals approached the vessel in a black-hulled skiff. No weapons were reported during the incident.

Non-Chinese shipowners can breathe a sigh of relief that they can still order most ship types risk-free in China, according to HSBC, following last week’s decision by the US Trade Representative to water down penalties on Chinese-linked tonnage. 4. NYC Waterfront Project Aims to Shift Freight from Truck to Barge. New York City’s slow-moving efforts to get more freight off the city’s congested highways and onto the metropolis’s navigable waterways appeared to take an important step forward this week. Bronx-based material manufacturing and distribution group Con Agg Global has a plan to bring water-borne freight directly to the doorstep of the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center and Fulton Fish Market in the Bronx, massive wholesale distribution centers currently served by over 10,000 trucks a day.

6. Engine Room Fire on Passenger Vessel Linked to Poor Maintenance, NTSB Reports. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined that debris in an engine’s lubrication oil system caused a serious engine failure and subsequent fire aboard the passenger vessel Ocean Navigator while docked in Portland, Maine.

8. Outcomes of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83). The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) met for its 83rd session in person at IMO Headquarters in London (with remote participation enabled) from 7 to 11 April 2025.
