2. Port of Long Beach sees cargo decline for May. Trade moving through the Port of Long Beach declined 8.2% in May due to tariffs and retaliatory tariffs, but a temporary pause on those fees will likely trigger a cargo surge by late June.

Dockworkers and terminal operators processed 639,160 twenty-foot equivalent units in May, down 8.2% from the same month last year. Imports dropped 13.4% to 299,116 TEUs and exports decreased 18.6% to 82,149 TEUs. Empty containers moving through the Port rose 3.2% to 257,895 TEUs.

3. Veson Nautical global dry bulk fleet set to drop 22% in young tonnage by 2028. The global dry bulk fleet is facing a sharp contraction in younger, more efficient tonnage, with the supply of vessels under 15 years of age projected to fall by 22% by 2028, according to new analysis shared by Oliver Kirkham, Senior Valuation Analyst at Veson Nautical, a global leader in maritime freight and fleet management solutions.

5. Singapore’s Proteus teams with Symbio to bring automotive hydrogen fuel cell tech to shipping. A new hydrogen fuel cell system tailored for maritime applications has been unveiled by Singapore-based Proteus Energy in partnership with French hydrogen fuel cell specialist Symbio.The modular system, known as the Proteus Maritime Fuel Cell Solution, is intended for deployment on vessels such as harbor craft, coastal ships, offshore support vessels, and inland waterway vessels. The first product in the lineup, the Proteus75, offers a 75 kW output per fuel cell stack, with scalability through stack combinations.

6. Hagland buys chartering platform Vanora. Norwegian maritime group Hagland has acquired compatriot chartering platform Vanora in a strategic move to bolster its digital service offerings. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.The deal will see the Aanensen family run vehicle integrate Vanora’s flagship solution, VesselAdmin, a digital chartering and payment platform designed for the maritime sector.

7. Shipping braces as US weighs entering the Israel-Iran conflict. With indications coming from Washington that Donald Trump is willing to join Israel in its attack on Iran, the situation in Middle Eastern waters remains highly tense.
