1. Enclosed space survey aims to understand why seafarers are still dying. Ship managers and maritime professionals have joined forces to address concerns over the continuing deaths of seafarers and shore workers in enclosed spaces onboard ships.

InterManager, the international trade association for the ship management sector, has collaborated with The Nautical Institute and IMarEST to gain up to date information on the risks faced by workers in enclosed spaces on ships.

2. The first LNG-powered vessel arrives at the Limassol container terminal. Eurogate Container Terminal Limassol welcomed the first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered vessel at the container terminal of Limassol Port.

With a total length of 205 metres and a capacity of 2,126 TEU, the CMA CGM SALAMANQUE LNG constitutes a significant step forward and a tangible example of good practice and alternative solutions towards a green energy transition in the shipping sector.

3. IMO statement on the loss of seafarers in the attack on a merchant ship in Odesa. Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, has issued a statement following an attack in Odesa on 11 March:

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of seafarers in the recent attack in Odesa, which has claimed the lives of four seafarers. My thoughts and condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, as well as those who were injured.

6. Beijing blasts sale of Hutchison Ports. CK Hutchison’s share price plunged today in Hong Kong following Beijing’s public criticism of its plans to sell the majority of its ports division to BlackRock and Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) for $22.8bn, bringing into question whether the transaction, the largest ports deal in history, will be completed.

7. Chinese owners and yards come out fighting in US trade dispute. Both the China Shipowners’ Association (CSA) and the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI) have left public comments criticising the US Trade Representative’s proposals to charge extra for fleets with Chinese-built tonnage calling at American ports, arguably the biggest shock policy to potentially hit shipping in the opening months of the return of Donald Trump to the White House.

8. US could bar ships from countries seen to be creating maritime chokepoints. In the latest maritime bombshell coming out of Washington DC, the Federal Maritime Commission, the country’s shipping regulator, has warned it might bar entry to ships from countries found to be causing choke points at key locations around the world.

9. Russian Oil Delivery Takes Seven Times Longer After Sanctions. The delivery of a two-million-barrel cargo of Russian oil to China took seven times longer than it would have done prior to a round of US sanctions imposed on Moscow back in January. The drawn out delivery of Sokol crude from Russia’s Sakhalin 1 project into Chinese storage tanks shows how US sanctions continue to disrupt and impede — but importantly not halt —  the flow of Russian oil.

10. FMC Launches Investigation into Global Maritime Chokepoints Amid Rising Shipping Disruptions. The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into seven critical maritime chokepoints that are significantly impacting global shipping.

The investigation, designated as FMC-2025-0005, will examine transit constraints at key waterways including the English Channel, Malacca Strait, Northern Sea Passage, Singapore Strait, Panama Canal, Strait of Gibraltar, and the Suez Canal.
