Brokers are reporting Maersk has gone to China for its next phase of expansion, with landmark orders for LNG dual-fuel vessels, a type of propulsion it had previously distanced itself from. Multiple broking houses have the Danish carrier signing for six firm 16,000 teu ships at New Times Shipbuilding in a contract that comes with options for six more vessels.

8. Washington’s targeting of Iranian tankers sparks memories of sanctions levied at COSCO in 2019. Washington’s decision to go after Iranian-linked VLCCs with sanctions has sparked memories of the great freight rate spike of Q4 2019 when supertanker spot rates leapt above $100,000 a day. The US Treasury put sanctions on 17 companies and 23 vessels including many VLCCs last week, stating in a press release that Iran is using a shadow fleet to load and transport Iranian oil for sale to buyers in Asia.

9. China’s Car and Ship Exports Hit Record Despite Slowing Trade. China’s exports of both cars and ships hit records in September even as broader shipments slowed, underscoring the rapid changes in the nation’s industry that are fueling global trade tensions.
The firms shipped more than $11.5 billion of vehicles last month, taking the total this year to almost $88 billion, the customs administration said Monday. The 464 ships sold overseas were worth more than $4.6 billion, the most ever and more than double the amount the same month last year.
