2. Mediterranean LNG imports drop in 2024 on strong renewables, subdued LNG pull. 3. One in three seafarers still being forced to pay illegal recruitment fees, survey finds. A third of seafarers have said that they have paid a fee to get a job, with many reporting that they had gone into debt to do so, according to a 2024 survey.
Some 31% of respondents had been asked to pay a fee during their career, with 28% saying they were asked during 2024 – demonstrating that this remains a serious problem for maritime workers.

5. Louis Dreyfus Armateurs lands $575m Vattenfall SOV deal. Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has secured a contract for up to three service operation vessels that will be deployed on offshore wind sites in the German North Sea.
The French family-owned shipowner has emerged as a winner of an SOV tender issued by Sweden’s biggest utility, Vattenfall, for the wind farms DanTysk and Sandbank and the Nordlicht wind farm zone, plus an option for a third vessel.

6. Diana Shipping fixes out cape to SwissMarine. Greek bulker owner Diana Shipping has entered into a time charter contract with SwissMarine for one of its capesize vessels.
Stone Shipping hired the 2010-built, 177,773 dwt bulker New York. The gross charter rate is $17,600 per day, minus a 5% commission paid to third parties, for a period until a minimum of January 15, 2026, up to a maximum of March 30, 2026.

7. US unveils largest Russian shipping sanctions package. In total, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has added sanctions to 183 ships, including 155 tankers, as well as going after energy giants Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, with affiliates, plus their CEOs. Shipping companies including Sovcomflot, and a series of dark fleet operators have also been targeted as have Russia-based marine insurers Ingosstrakh and Alfastrakhovanie. The sprawling sanctions package also includes companies such as China’s Wison who have delivered modules to the Arctic LNG 2 project.

8. Chinese Fishing Vessel ‘Liberated’ from Somali Pirates. A Chinese-owned fishing vessel has been liberated following an armed robbery off Somalia’s northeastern Puntland coast, according to information from the Chinese Embassy to Somalia.
