1. Saltchuk wraps up takeover of US tanker owner OSG. Saltchuk Resources has completed its takeover of the Jones Act tankers and oil tug barges owner and operator, Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG). 
The privately owned Seattle-based company, which also controls TOTE and Foss, has acquired all shares not already owned for $8.50 per share in cash at an enterprise value of about $950m.

2. Duisburg starts handling Ukrainian grain transshipments. Due to Russian attacks on Odesa, which have happened many times until now, Ukraine started transshipping its corn through the German port of Duisburg.
Even today, Odesa suffered another hit in the early hours of the day that resulted in the deaths of a truck driver and a port worker. Another port worker was injured.

3. Monjasa grows owned tanker fleet with double acquisition. The 2004-built 17,200 dwt Monjasa Rover, acquired as Fure Nord from Furetank, and the 2009-built 7,900 dwt Monjasa Hunter, picked up from Christiania Shipping as Annelise Theresa, have joined the fleet as the region sees increased bunker demand as a result of the lengthy rerouting of ships around the Cape of Good Hope.

4. Marlin Luanda and Pemex Maya Crews Receive Top IMO Bravery Award. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced the recipients of the 2024 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea award, the highest recognition for bravery in the maritime industry.

5. U.S. Container Imports Continue to Show Robust Growth Over 2023. U.S. container import volume remained strong in June 2024, with volumes increasing by double-digits compared to the same month last year, according to Descartes Systems Group’s July Global Shipping Report.

6. Power Outages Hinder Hurricane Beryl Recovery, Delay Port, Infrastructure Restarts. About 1.7 million customers remained without power in Texas on Wednesday morning, two days after Hurricane Beryl made landfall, as progress was slow during the night, hampering efforts to restore critical oil infrastructure.

7. Stormy Seas Ahead: Tackling Legal and Operational Challenges of the EU ETS at the last Cyprus Marine Club gathering. 8. DNV rules create new in-operation class framework, enable hydrogen vessels and on-board carbon capture. Classification society DNV has published updates to its rules for classification of ships and offshore structures. In addition to rules supporting the development and deployment of decarbonization technologies, the new in-operation class notations seek to bring clarity to the responsibilities of class customers for notations that have a mix of design and operational requirements.

9. The Nautical Institute welcomes its new President. The Nautical Institute is delighted to welcome Captain Trevor Bailey MNM FNI as its new President. He takes over the presidency from Captain André LeGoubin MNM MA FNI.  The election took place at the Institute’s recent AGM held in Manila, Philippines.

10. The obvious idea that slashes shipping’s climate impact. A motto in much of the shipping industry is “sail fast, then wait” – which can be an expensive and wasteful way of travelling. Some ships are making the bold move of slowing down to save money and emissions.A giant containership traffic jam was swelling in the waters off California. In late 2021, demand for goods had exploded as Covid-19 restrictions eased and the world began – slowly – to return to normal. The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles couldn’t cope with the sudden influx of vessels from Asia.
