1. 2. Hong Kong Chamber of Shipping launched to boost Hong Kong’s status as int’l shipping hub. The Hong Kong Chamber of Shipping was officially established on Monday with an aim to shore up Hong Kong’s status as an international shipping hub.
Addressing a launch reception, Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, who is also a founder member and adviser of the newly established industry body, said that the institutional advantage of the “one country, two systems” underpins and constitutes the unique edge of Hong Kong’s shipping sector.

5. BIMCO Shipping Number of the Week. Guyana’s oil exports jump 58
“Year-to-date, Guyana’s oil exports have jumped to 598 thousand barrels per day (kbpd), a 58% year-on-year increase, adding to the growth achieved in previous years. Over the past three years, the average annual growth rate has hit 76%,” says Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at BIMCO.

6. 44% of record global liner orderbook is replacement tonnage. Today’s containership orderbook is the largest it has ever been in terms of teu capacity. Helping put some perspective to the newbuild avalanche, analysts at Alphaliner have identified just how much of the ships on order are needed as fleet replacement with Maersk notably behind its peers when it comes to rejuvenating its ageing fleet.

7. LNG roars back as leading alternative fuel. LNG as shipping’s preeminent alternative fuel continues to make waves, both in terms of newbuild contracts as well as from its fierce opponents.Lobby group SEA-LNG has announced this week that active LNG-fuelled vessels now account for more than 2% of the global shipping fleet. Once the orderbook is taken into account, this number increases to 4% by vessel numbers or 6% by deadweight tonnage (dwt).

8. Singapore to make digital bunkering mandatory from next April. The world’s largest bunkering event, SIBCON, is underway in Singapore, the dominant global bunkering hub, with delegates getting an idea of how this part of the shipping business is about to get the digital treatment. Singapore will be the first port globally to implement digital bunkering at scale for all bunkering operations, the country’s senior transport minister, Dr Amy Khor, revealed at the show today.
