2. South Korean Shipbuilders land KRW 2 Tril. in orders in a single day. The three major domestic shipbuilders—HD Korea Shipbuilding, Hanwha Ocean, and Samsung Heavy Industries—announced on Oct. 2 that they had secured shipbuilding orders worth over 2 trillion won in a single day. This marks the first time since 2008 that these shipbuilders have achieved such a milestone, reflecting a significant resurgence in the industry.

3. Ex-Middle East tanker freight shrugs off regional military escalation. Loading demand rather than a largely unchanged risk profile is driving tanker freight rates from the Middle East, which have shown little reaction to the latest ramp-up in hostilities between Israel and its adversaries.

4. New multipurpose terminal opens in East Java. East Java Multipurpose Terminal (EJMT), part of International Container Terminal Service Inc.’s (ICTSI) operation in Indonesia, has opened for business this month.
This is only one of a host of new terminals all opening across the giant archipelago, Southeast Asia’s largest country.

5. Avenir agrees LNG bunker time charter with Eni. Small-scale liquified natural gas player Avenir LNG has signed a time charter party with LNG Shipping, a subsidiary of Italian energy giant Eni, for one of its LNG bunker vessels.
The chartered out vessel is the 2021-built, 7,500 cu m Avenir Aspiration. The multi-year time charter to Eni will begin from delivery in Europe in 2025.

6. Charterers commit to Geneva Dry 2025. Anglo American, Cargill, Eramet, Heidelberg Materials Trading, Trafigura, and Vale are among the who’s who of chartering attending the 2025 edition of Geneva Dry, the world’s premier commodities shipping conference scheduled for April 28 and 29 next year.

7. BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping issue guide to help maritime industry reduce underwater noise. The attention on underwater radiated noise from ships has significantly increased over the last few years and the demand for action has risen due to its negative effects on marine creatures and the environment. Commercial shipping is one of the main contributors to underwater noise at low frequencies and research has shown that the noise is harmful to the critical life functions of a wide range of marine life.

8. Chinese-Russian Naval Patrol Skirts U.S. Territorial Waters Off Alaska Coast. China and Russia continue to step up their patrol activity in the Arctic. A week after the U.S. Coast Guard reported sighting Chinese and Russian patrol vessels around 500 miles southwest of Alaska, the foreign flotilla has come as close as 12 nautical miles of the Alaska coastline.

9. Ukraine Says Russian Missile Hits Second Grain Ship. Russia targeted a ship loaded with Ukrainian grain with a ballistic missile Monday — the second in two days — killing one person and injuring five, according to the Infrastructure Ministry in Kyiv.
The Optima, which sails under the flag of Palau, was damaged in an Odesa region port shortly after it docked for loading, Infrastructure Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said in a statement without elaborating on the size of its cargo or exact location.

10. Ports Restricted, Oil Facilities Shut as Milton Approaches Florida. At least one oil and gas platform in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico was shut on Monday and Florida ports imposed restrictions on vessel navigation as Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified.
Most energy infrastructure on the U.S. Gulf Coast, including oil and gas production facilities, liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants and refineries, is expected to be out of the storm path, but the closure of terminals could temporarily disrupt exports and imports.
