4. US sanctions two more LNG carriers, two shipping companies for Russia trade. The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on two more LNG carriers and two related shipping companies for Russia-related transactions, according to its statement Sept. 5.
The two LNG carriers added to OFAC’s Specially Designated Nationals list are Mulan and New Energy, while the two shipping entities are Gotik Shipping Co., with offices in India and Liberia, and Plio Energy Cargo Shipping, based in India, according to the statement.

5. Expert workshop discusses IMO “mid-term” GHG reduction measures. An expert workshop was held at IMO headquarters (4-5 September) in London to present outcomes and key findings of a comprehensive impact assessment into proposals related to “mid-term” greenhouse gas reduction measures for international shipping. The impact assessment will be discussed at the next session of IMO’s Marine Environment Committee (MEPC 82) from 30 September to 4 October 2024.

6. Lloyd’s Register partners on fuel cell and CCS study to support emissions reduction. Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) business advisory team is partnering with energy companies ROTOBOOST and Amogy on a fuel cell and pre-combustion Carbon Capture Storage System (CCS) study to assess opportunities for emissions reduction. The joint development project (JDP) will evaluate the use of hydrogen fuel cells, ammonia and methane cracking technology and CCS from a technical readiness, financial and regulatory perspective.

8. Höegh Autoliners sells off another ageing vessel as fleet renewal presses ahead. Norway’s Höegh Autoliners has continued to offload ageing tonnage in a new deal, which will see a 19-year-old vessel exit the fleet as the company readies the field for its newbuilding series to enter service.
The Oslo-based company is shipping out the 2005-built Höegh New York to an undisclosed buyer for $60.6m. The 6,500 ceu is debt-free and should change hands in the first quarter of 2025, the Andreas Enger-led operator of around 40 car carriers said in a stock exchange filing.

9. In Desperate Move Russia Sends First-Ever Conventional LNG Carrier Through Arctic. In a risky move aimed at overcoming Western sanctions Russian LNG producer Novatek dispatched the non-ice class LNG carrier Everest Energy onto the icy waters of the Northern Sea Route. It is the first time a conventional carrier has attempted the route.
