1. Carl Schou steps down from Wilhelmsen Ship Management. Wilhelmsen Ship Management today announced the retirement of Carl Schou after 19 years of service, including 16 years as CEO. Haakon Lenz, currently serving as COO, will assume the role of CEO on January 1.
Lenz started his career in DNV and had a background as a naval architect before moving into shipmanagement for V.Ships in Norway. He joined Wilhelmsen Ship Management in 2008.

2. Pleiades Shipping inks LR1 newbuilds in China. Greek tanker owner Pleiades Shipping is rejuvenating its LR1 fleet with orders for up to four newbuilds in China.Brokers in Greece report the Kifissia-based company has contracted New Times Shipbuilding for two firm 73,000 dwt units costing about $55m each and secured options for two more ships.

3. ArcelorMittal lets go of two kamsarmaxes. Two kamsarmaxes controlled by steel producing giant ArcelorMittal are widely reported sold by brokers. The 83,000 dwt pair – AM Hamburg and AM Quebec – were built for ArcelorMittal 11 years ago at New Times in China. Brokers report they have been sold en bloc for $37m to unspecified Chinese buyers.

4. Iranian ‘Shadow Fleet’ Oil Transfer Causes Large Spill in Persian Gulf. A ship-to-ship transfer of Iranian crude oil between two dark tankers has resulted in a substantial oil spill in the Persian Gulf in the waters adjacent to Kuwait, Iraq, and Iran.
The transfer took place between the two Aframax tankers Fortune Galaxy (9257010) and Serano II (9165542) on September 29 and 30. A five kilometer-long oil slick is easily visible on satellite imagery.

5. Historic SS United States to Become World’s Largest Artificial Reef Off Florida Coast. The city of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and the SS United States Conservancy have announced an agreement to convert the iconic SS United States into the world’s largest artificial reef.
The development comes after the Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners approved a contingent contract to acquire the historic ocean liner, subject to the conclusion of a U.S. District Court-imposed mediation.

CTVs are widely used in Europe for transporting workers and equipment necessary for offshore wind farm construction and maintenance. However, the use of diesel engines has raised concerns about carbon emissions.
