1. New air pollution limits for ships enter into effect in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean Sea officially became an Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides and Particulate Matter (Med SOx ECA) under MARPOL Annex VI on 1 May 2025. The sulphur content in fuel oil for ships operating in the area is now limited to 0.1%, significantly reducing air pollution and delivering major benefits to both human health and the marine environment.

3. IMO 2028 – A New Legislative Measure for the Decarbonisation of Shipping. On Friday 11th April 2025, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) achieved another important step towards establishing a legally binding framework to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships globally, aiming for net-zero emissions by or around 2050.

4. Panama recognised at Sea Asia 2025 for innovation in exhibition design. The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) participated in the 2025 edition of Sea Asia, one of the premier maritime industry events in the Asia-Pacific region, held as part of Singapore Maritime Week. On this occasion, the Panamanian pavilion was honored with the “Most Experimental Booth” award, presented by the event organizers.

5. Premuda seals management buyout. Italian tanker and bulker owner and operator Premuda has concluded a management buyout led by its top executives.

The deal spearheaded by chief executive Marco Fiori and chief of finance Enrico Barbieri has seen the acquisition of 100% of the share capital in the Genoa-based company for an undisclosed sum.

6. Navigator fixes $300m of new financing. New York-listed Navigator Holdings has lined up $300m in fresh financing to clear out existing debt maturities.

The Mads Peter Zacho-led company said its subsidiaries Navigator Gas and Othello Shipping have struck a deal with a consortium of lenders comprising Nordea Bank, Danish Ship Finance, Danske Bank, DNB UK, ING Bank London branch and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken for a term loan and revolving credit, secured by eight vessels.

7. Allseas taps Wuchang Shipbuilding for offshore vessel duo. Swiss-based marine construction specialist Allseas has ordered two offshore construction vessels from Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group in China.The vessels are based on the SALT 308 OCV design, they feature advanced equipment and systems to deliver enhanced performance, flexibility, and functionality.

8. Responders Cap Spewing Well in Louisiana Marsh. The U.S. Coast Guard and Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office (LOSCO) have successfully secured an oil and natural gas discharge from Well 59 located in marshlands near Garden Island Bay, Louisiana.

9. South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean Targets US Navy Orders as Trump Seeks Shipbuilding Ties.  South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean aims to boost its revenue from overseas military vessels to around 4 trillion won ($2.91 billion) by 2030 and hopes to pick up more repair orders from the U.S. Navy, a senior executive told Reuters.

10. DEME Completes Acquisition of Norwegian Offshore Wind Contractor Havfram. Belgian marine engineering giant DEME has completed its acquisition of Norwegian offshore wind contractor Havfram in a deal valued at approximately 900 million euros.The acquisition, first announced on April 9, 2025, sees DEME Offshore Holding NV taking full ownership of Havfram Wind Holdco AS from previous shareholders Sandbrook Capital and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments).
