1. Presidential election obscures port resolution on US east coast. Day two of the dockworker strike across America’s eastern seaboard sees little chance of an early end to the industrial action that is seeing queues forming outside many of the country’s largest ports.

2. Hapag-Lloyd contracts two Chinese yards for boxships worth up to $5.25bn. Hapag-Lloyd has selected two Chinese yards for its next fleet expansion, orders that total $5.25bn if all options are exercised, making it one of the largest containership orders in history.
Broker Intermodal reports the German carrier has contracted Yangzijiang Shipbuilding to build 10 firm plus five options 17,000 teu LNG dual-fuelled ships, costing $210m each. The ships will have 1,600 reefer slots each.

3. New Shanghai containerline starts operations. A new Chinese container line based out of Shanghai has commenced calls across northeast Asia. 
STF Shipping offers three container services linking China with South Korea and Russia’s Far East, taking over from where Dubai-based CStar Line previously operated. CStar quit the route in August.

4. M/T Sounion Continues to Burn as Houthi Attacks Resume in Red Sea. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) has released an update on the ongoing efforts to save the M/T Sounion, a Greek-flagged tanker carrying approximately 1 million barrels of crude oil, which was attacked by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in the Red Sea in August.

5. ILA Union Outlines Key Demands to End Dockworker Strike. The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) has outlined key demands that must be met to resume contract negotiations with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX).
The union’s response comes after USMX’s statement on Tuesday regarding their contract offer, which the ILA claims “distorts the facts and misleads the public.”

8. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries strengthens supply chain with acquisition of curved block manufacturer. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is set to acquire Lee Young Industrial Machinery, a ship equipment manufacturer, marking a significant move in the shipbuilding industry. The acquisition, which closed on September 30, is reported to be in the hundreds of billions of won. This strategic decision comes as the shipbuilding sector experiences a resurgence but faces challenges in the supply chain of critical components.

9. US Navy officials visit HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean to discuss future ship technologies.
