1. WISTA UK celebrates 50 years of championing diversity and inclusion in the Maritime Industry. The Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association UK  marked its 50th anniversary with a celebratory event highlighting five decades of progress and ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the maritime industry. The event, which included an insightful conference and a grand evening reception, brought together industry leaders, members, and supporters to honour achievements and set the stage for future advancements.

2. Port of Piraeus received two awards for the contribution to the Greek Economy – Industry Leader in Port Authorities and Greek Business Champion. 3. Condolence message from International Chamber of Shipping on the death of Spyros M Polemis. The Board of Directors of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of Spyros M Polemis, who served as Chairman of ICS from 2006 to 2012. Mr Polemis had a long history of leadership of our industry previously serving on the ICS Board for many years as the representative of the Union of Greek Shipowners. He was also President of the International Shipping Federation (ISF) before its merger with ICS, which he oversaw, in 2011.

5. Two Panamanian ships suffer incidents in international waters. The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), as the governing body of the Panama Ship Registry, expresses its awareness of the events that have affected Panamanian-flagged vessels in recent days.

The newly built container ship Maersk Frankfurt suffered an explosion and fire while sailing in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India.

6. Athenian Sea Carriers adds to chemical tanker newbuild series. Greece’s Athenian Sea Carriers has bolstered its chemical tanker orderbook in China.The Kyriakou family-controlled owner has exercised options for two 18,500 dwt vessels at Wuchang Shipbuilding Group taking its newbuilding programme at the yard to 10.

7. Chinese commodity imports reach new highs. All year long there has been a severe mismatch between the doom and gloom headlines surrounding the Chinese economy and the mountains of commodities shifting through the nation’s ports. 

This dislocation is getting wider with the latest data from broker Braemar showing that in the second quarter China managed to break all records for dry bulk import volumes.

8. Watch: Houthi Drone Boat Destroyed by Armed Guards. A new video circulating online shows an alleged attack on the M/V Pumba in the Red Sea using an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) seemingly loaded with explosives.The USV was subsequently destroyed after Pumba’s embarked armed security team returned fire on the vessel, causing it to explode just off the stern.

9. Navy Secretary Launches $50 Million Michigan Maritime Manufacturing Initiative. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro has announced the Michigan Maritime Manufacturing Initiative (M3) aimed at revitalizing the maritime industrial base workforce.The initiative was unveiled at Macomb Community College, one of several academic partners dedicated to fostering the future maritime workforce in Michigan.

10. Customs duties cut, more rate tweaks soon: Nirmala. The budget on Tuesday tweaked customs duties on several items to provide relief to people, boost domestic manufacturing and promote export competitiveness covering a range of products such as life-saving medicines, rare earth minerals and precious metals, including gold and silver.
