2. Ferry loaded with fuel sinks at Russian port after Ukrainian attack. A ferry loaded with fuel tanks sank in the Russian port of Kavkaz in southern Krasnodar region on Thursday after a Ukrainian attack, local authorities said.
The ferry carrying 30 fuel tanks, as confirmed by Fyodor Babenkov, district head of the town of Temryuk which includes the port, sustained significant damage as a result of the attack, which caused a fire.

4. Record attendance at Nautical Institute Singapore conference as industry leaders tackle critical challenges in decarbonising the Shipping Ecosystem. The Nautical Institute Singapore proudly hosted its most successful conference to date, attracting a record number of 221 delegates. Titled “Charting a Greener World – Dealing with Sustainability, Emergency Preparedness, and Seafarer Well-being,” the conference was held on 21 August 2024 at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel.

5. MaritimeONE Scholars and Industry join Nationwide Effort to transform Singapore into a City in Nature through the Plant-A-Tree programme. The Singapore Maritime Foundation) partnered with National Parks Board’s (NParks) registered charity and IPC, Garden City Fund to organise a tree planting at Coney Island Park, which brought together 62 past and present MaritimeONE scholars and 13 corporate donors1 in a collective effort to give back to the community. The $24,000 raised from corporate partners enabled 80 trees to be planted on 24 August 2024, under Garden City Fund’s Plant-A-Tree programme.

6. Japan’s top lines and yards join forces to develop liquefied carbon dioxide carrier designs. Japan’s largest shipping lines and shipbuilders are joining forces to study how to establish standard specifications and designs for liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers.
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) along with shipbuilders Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, Imabari Shipbuilding, Japan Marine United, and Nihon Shipyard are the partners in the study.

7. NYK Line charters another Diana Shipping bulker. New York-listed Greek bulker owner Diana Shipping has entered into a time charter contract with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) for one of its vessels.
NYK Line chartered the 2014-built, 179,492 dwt capesize bulker G. P. Zafirakis for a gross charter rate of $26,800, minus a 5% commission paid to third parties, for a minimum period of 23 months, up to a maximum of 26 months.

8. Østensjø Rederi orders cross-segment offshore newbuild in Spain. Norwegian shipowner and operator Østensjø Rederi has contracted what it describes as an ocean energy support vessel (OESV) newbuild at one of its favourite yards, Astilleros Gondan in Spain.
The vessel, scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2027, will be fit to operate across multiple segments, including inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR), construction, walk-to-work/flotel services, and cable laying.
