1. American port strike comes to an end. This week’s port strike across the US east and Gulf coasts came to an end on Thursday after dockworkers struck a tentative deal with port operators.
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) announced that the union had reached an agreement with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) on wages, suspending their walkout until January. Work resumes straight away.

2. Arctic emission control areas established at MEPC. As is common when it gathers, the final day of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is expected to run late with many last-minute compromises and negotiations.

3. Russian strike on bulk carrier off Romania seen as slip-up. Last month’s strike by Russian airforce planes on a bulk carrier close to Romania’s shoreline was likely a mistake, a new study from the UK’s Ministry of Defence suggests.
The 27,239 dwt bulker Aya, which was transporting Ukrainian grain to Egypt, sustained damage to its port side, including a cargo hold and a crane, when it came under attack on September 11.

4. Brazil’s Coastline Faces Accelerated Erosion As Atlantic Advances. Sonia Ferreira’s two-story house with a pool and garden on the Brazilian coast was yet another casualty of the advancing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, pushed higher by climate change.
On a recent visit, the 80-year-old retiree glanced around the mound of rubble left from the home she abandoned before it was destroyed in 2022 by the pounding waves in Atafona, north of Rio de Janeiro.

5. Pentagon To Spend $1.2B To Maintain Red Sea Operation. The Pentagon will spend about $1.2 billion to maintain ships deployed as part of operations in the Red Sea and to replenish stocks of missiles fired to repel attacks by Iran and its proxies,  according to new budget documents.

6. Diana Shipping announces direct continuation of time charter contract for m/v Phaidra with Aquavita. Diana Shipping , a global shipping company specializing in the ownership and bareboat charter-in of dry bulk vessels,  announced that, through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, it has extended the time charter contract with Aquavita International S.A., for one of its Post-Panamax dry bulk vessels, the m/v Phaidra.

7. New CEO for Wilhelmsen Ship Management. Wilhelmsen Ship Management today announces the retirement of Carl Schou after 19 years of service, including 16 years as CEO. Under his leadership, the company navigated industry challenges while instilling safety, innovation, and growth. Haakon Lenz, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer, will assume the role of CEO on 1 January 2025.

9. MOL merge 3 group companies to form a technical hub that puts Maritime Industry on Path to achieve decarbonisation. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, announced that effective April 1, 2025, it will merge three group subsidiaries responsible for maritime technology and engineering: MOL Marine & Engineering , MOL Ocean Expert , and MOL Ship Tech I. The proposal is an absorption merger, with MOLMEC as the surviving company. The official name of the new company will be announced in March 2025.

10. APM Terminals extends concession for ACT in Jordan. Since 2006, APM Terminals, in partnership with Aqaba Development Corporation, has been operating in Aqaba, Jordan, and as a premier gateway and transit hub, it has served as the logistical and economic backbone supporting both the Jordanian economy and neighboring countries. Therefore, it was a milestone for APM Terminals to have approval to extend the current concession with 15 years reaching until 2046. The agreement will be marked at a later date with an official signing in Jordan.
