2. Russian gas to Europe is on the slow road to zero. The year-end closure of a key Ukrainian pipeline transporting Russian gas to Europe marks the symbolic end of the continent’s dependence on Moscow’s energy. And the vague possibility of a ceasefire raised by the election of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency will not change the European Union’s energy equation much. From an economic viewpoint, it won’t need to switch Russian gas back on. Politically, it is unlikely to want to.

3. Business case for wind propulsion improves as decarbonisation rules kick in. FuelEU Maritime comes into force in January 2025 and wind propulsion is currently the only technology with a reward factor under the regulation. Vessels will be credited using such technologies by reducing the GHG intensity of energy used onboard.

5. Hapag-Lloyd concludes long-term offtake agreement for green methanol. Hapag-Lloyd has reached an agreement with Goldwind, a global strategic partner in clean energy with headquarters in Beijing, China, for the delivery of 250,000 tonnes of green methanol per year. The green methanol will consist of a blend of bio- and e-methanol, ensuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction of at least 70 percent, and comply with all current sustainability certification requirements.

7. Höegh Autoliners clinches another contract extension. Norway’s Höegh Autoliners has secured a new shipping contract with a major unnamed international carmaker.
The Oslo-listed outfit said the arrangement worth more than $100m is an extension of an existing deal, which has been updated to reflect the current market.

8. Shearwater secures more work off India. Norway’s Shearwater Geoservices has continued to win work offshore India with a new contract for a large-scale 2D seismic survey. The Bergen-based seismic vessel major has secured about five months of utilisation for its 2010-built SW Thuridur on the continental shelf margin off the west coast of India.

10. Coast Guard Inks Deal to Acquire ‘Aiviq’ As Vessel Arrives in Tampa Dry Dock to Begin Conversion. The U.S. Coast Guard has closed on a $125m fixed-price deal to acquire and convert icebreaking supply ship Aiviq from Offshore Surface Vessels LLC, part of Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO). The vessel is intended as a stopgap measure for the Coast Guard’s Arctic capabilities while the service awaits the completion of the first Polar Security Cutter icebreaker not before the end of the decade.
