2. Container Terminal sets record for efficiency. The automated container terminal at Qingdao Port, a subsidiary of Shandong Port Group, achieved an average productivity of 60.6 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per hour during an unloading task on Monday. This marks the 11th time that the terminal has set a world record for automated terminal efficiency.

3. Port automation a key sticking point in union, USEC ports negotiations ahead of 15 Jan deadline. 7. Premier Alliance launch delayed as US demands more details. The Premier Alliance, a new Asian liner grouping, had planned to start selling bookings later this week, something that will now likely have to be put on hold following intervention from the US.
The Premier Alliance is made up of members of the soon-to-disappear THE Alliance, minus Hapag-Lloyd, who is leaving it to join forces with Maersk in what will be called the Gemini Cooperation.

8. Arctic Shipping Sets New Records With Hundred Transit Voyages Carrying 3m Tonnes of Cargo in 2024. Even in the face of widening Western sanctions Russia managed to increase Arctic transit cargo by almost 50 percent over 2023. Its main Arctic shipping lane, the Northern Sea Route, recorded 97 transits carrying close to 3m tons of cargo; both figures surpassing previous highs. Total cargo volume along the route, including transits and traffic originating in Russia, stands around 40m tonnes in 2024.

9. Sanctioned Russia Oil Tanker Turns Back From Detour Around UK.  A tanker hauling Russian crude from the Baltic Sea to India that was observed heading toward the Shetland Islands — a route that would have taken it on a detour around the northern tip of the UK — made a sudden turn and instead took a more-typical journey through the English Channel.

10. Taiwan Raises Alert as China Deploys 90 Ships in Likely Drills. Taiwan raised its alert level on Monday saying China has set up seven zones of reserved airspace and deployed naval fleets and coast guard boats in what a security source described as the first military drills across a broad swathe of the region’s waters.
