4. Suez Canal tests new lane section to boost traffic. The Suez Canal has successfully tested a new lane that allows ships to travel in both directions along a 10-km stretch in its southern section, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced.

5. LNG shipping stocks: Modest gains despite low trading activity. Last week, the UP World LNG Shipping Index (UPI) outpaced the S&P 500, gaining 2.46% as the broader market rose by 0.67%. Despite this recovery during the shortened Christmas week, the UPI faced uncertainty as moving averages signaled mixed trends and trading activity remained subdued. Seasonal factors, such as the onset of winter, drove natural gas prices higher, though this did not translate to increased LNG tanker spot rates.

6. Crowley acquires mooring specialist Main Line. US shipping conglomerate Crowley has bolstered its harbour services through the acquisition of compatriot vessel mooring business Main Line.

The Florida-based company said the move would provide its customers calling on the ports of Seattle and Tacoma “with a comprehensive solution for their vessel mooring and ship assist needs”.

7. Transpetro in for four tanker newbuilds at local yards. Brazil’s Transpetro has selected builders for four handysize product tankers as part of a fleet renewal and expansion program that foresees the construction of 25 vessels for the Petrobras subsidiary.

8. Equinor secures $3bn in financing for US offshore wind project. Norwegian energy giant Equinor has secured a $3bn financing package for its Empire Wind 1 project in the US.The company explained that the project was able to secure competitive terms due to strong interest from lenders. “The final group of lenders includes some of the most experienced lenders in the sector along with many of Equinor’s relationship banks,” Equinor stated.

9. A Timeline of Suspected Baltic Sea Sabotage Incidents.  A Finnish court has denied a request for the release of an oil tanker suspected by police of damaging an undersea power line and four telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea last month.

10. Greek Shipping Companies Fined $4.5 Million for Illegal Oil Discharges, Cover-Up. Two Greek shipping companies have been slapped with $4.5 million in fines and penalties after their vessel, the MT Kriti Ruby, was caught illegally dumping oily waste at sea and attempting to cover up the environmental crimes.
