1. Shipping organisations increasingly concerned about seafarer safety. The chairpersons of the world’s biggest shipping industry organisations gathered on 6 February in Athens to discuss topics including greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and the impact of geopolitics on shipping. By far the most important topic on the agenda was how the industry, and the international community, can help limit and put an end to a rise in unjust treatment and criminalisation of its seafarers.

2. IMO agrees on a revised action plan to tackle marine plastic litter. The IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response have agreed on the draft 2025 Action Plan to Address Marine Plastic Litter from Ships, with a view to its approval by the Marine Environment Protection Committee at its upcoming session from 7-11 April 2025 (MEPC 83).

3. Hapag-Lloyd concludes green financing of its 24 new container ships. Hapag-Lloyd will use green financings for the 24 large container ships it ordered in October 2024. The newbuildings will have a combined capacity of 312,000 TEU and involve a combined investment volume of around USD 4 billion.

4. South Korea’s H-Line taps domestic yard for LNG bunker vessel. South Korean owner H-Line Shipping has ordered an LNG bunkering vessel at domestic yard HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC).

The contract covers an 18,000 cu m unit costing about KRW127bn ($87.6m) with no specified delivery date.

5. NYK and Yara link up for ammonia-fuelled gas carrier newbuild. Japanese shipping line Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has secured a charter deal from Yara Clean Ammonia, part of Norwegian ammonia and fertilizer manufacturer Yara for an ammonia-fuelled medium gas carrier.

Described as the world’s first charter for such a vessel, the deal will see a 40,000 cu m newbuild enter service in late 2026.

6. Seacon ships out another product tanker to Union Maritime. Hong Kong-listed Seacon Shipping is selling another bareboat chartered modern chemical and oil products carrier to UK bulker and tanker player Union Maritime.

The Qingdao-based owner and operator has struck a deal to offload the 2021-built 34,800 dwt MR1 Golden Dahlia for roughly $32.9m.

7. Norway Shifts Focus to Floating Offshore Wind.  Norway will not offer acreage suitable for bottom-fixed offshore wind farm development when it next announces new tenders, and will instead focus on floating wind options, it said on Monday.

The government had previously said it would offer new areas in its North Sea bordering Denmark suitable for turbines fixed to the seabed, that may also connect to other countries via so-called hybrid cables.

8. Historic SS United States Faces New Delays in Final Journey to Become World’s Largest Artificial Reef. The SS United States, America’s most iconic ocean liner, has encountered another setback in its planned departure from Philadelphia, where the vessel has been docked since 1996.The U.S. Coast Guard has requested additional details to ensure safe towing operations between Piers 82 and 80, postponing the ship’s February 8th departure. The initial pier transfer—originally planned for November—had been rescheduled for February 6 at 8:21 p.m. during the second high tide.

10. DP World’s container handling hits record high in 2024, up 8.3%. DP World’s ports and terminals handled a record 88.3 million TEU in 2024, up 8.3% year-on-year despite macroeconomic headwinds and concerns over the outlook for global trade.

The global logistics business, which now has the capacity to handle more than 100 million TEU across operations in 78 countries, benefitted from long-term infrastructure investment contributing to strong growth and new services calling at its terminals.
