1. Philly Shipyard steps forward to meet US LNG carrier requirements. The Korean-controlled Philly Shipyard is gearing up to build the first LNG carriers in America since the 1970s. Following last week’s announcement by the US Trade Representative (USTR) on port fees designed to boost American shipbuilding, Hanhwa Ocean, which bought Philly Shipyard last year, has said it will embark on a project to build gas ships in the US.

2. FMC classifies Chipolbrok as a controlled carrier. The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) in the US has classified the Chinese-Polish Joint Stock Shipping Company (Chipolbrok) as a controlled carrier of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and is adding it to the commission’s controlled carrier list. The company, with 31 MPPs in its fleet, is jointly owned by the governments of the PRC and the Republic of Poland.  Chipolbrok is headquartered in Shanghai.

3. Fear of grey boxes. Timor arcium griseorum. I hope I have got the Latin for “Fear of grey boxes” correct, because it is the widespread fear – almost a medical condition – of container shipping that I want to write about.There was a time when fear of the grey box was widespread in the liner shipping industry, and with good reason. Liner shipping companies operated in so-called conferences which promised exporters a reliable service in exchange for restrictive practices aimed at limiting competition.

4. Seacon orders ultramax bulker at Tsuneishi Zhoushan. Hong Kong-listed Secon Shipping is growing its dry bulk fleet with an ultramax newbuilding at Tsuneishi Zhoushan Shipbuilding. The Qingdao-based owner and operator is paying $38.34m to see the Tsuneishi-controlled Chinese yard, in which Yangzijiang Shipbuilding also holds a 34% stake, deliver the 63,300 dwt vessel in April 2027.

5. Hanwha Ocean Launches Drillship ‘Tidal Action’ for Petrobras Charter. South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has marked its entry into the deepwater drilling operations sector with the naming ceremony of its next-generation drillship ‘Tidal Action’.The vessel includes advanced capabilities, including drilling operations at depths up to 12,000 meters in waters reaching 3,600 meters deep. The drillship features a dynamic positioning system and advanced blowout preventers for enhanced operational safety.

6. Massive Surge in Transpacific Blank Sailings Amid U.S.-China Trade Tensions. Container shipping lines have dramatically increased blank sailings on Transpacific routes in response to escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and China, according to a new report from Sea-Intelligence.The total blanked capacity for weeks 16-19 has surged to 367,800 TEU, representing a significant increase from just 60,000 TEU three weeks prior. The Asia-North America West Coast trade lane has seen scheduled capacity drop by 12% compared to six weeks ago, while the Asia-North America East Coast route experienced an even steeper decline of 14%.

7. Sino-US Trade War Redrawing Global LPG Trading, Outlook. The global liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market is facing an upheaval as high tariffs on U.S. imports force Chinese buyers to swap American cargoes for alternatives from the Middle East, while U.S. shipments divert to Europe and elsewhere in Asia.

8. China’s US Envoy Urges End to Trade War, But Warns Beijing Ready to Fight.  China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, has urged Washington to seek common ground with Beijing and pursue peaceful coexistence while warning that China stood ready to retaliate in the escalating trade war.

9. Wallenius Wilhelmsen selects Svitzer for low-emissions towage. Wallenius Wilhelmsen will reduce emissions from the towage, manoeuvring and berthing of its fleet of roro and vehicle carriers in ports following an environmental agreement with Svitzer.

Under this EcoTow agreement, Svitzer will use biofuels across its fleet of tugboats providing towage services to its ships across Australia, the UK and Scandinavia.
