2. INTERCARGO meetings held in China with focus on safety and decarbonisation. INTERCARGO, the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners, convened last week in Guangzhou for its semi-annual meetings, the first time the Association has held such an event in China.

3. Lloyd’s Register Advisory verifies the performance of Anemoi Rotor sails on TR Lady Kamsarmax following a robust, year-long, multi-voyage testing period. Anemoi Marine Technologies, a leader in wind-assisted propulsion technology, has announced independently verified results of its Rotor Sail system following nearly a year of rigorous testing. In a Statement of Fact, Lloyd’s Register Advisory confirmed the methodology Anemoi used for calculating fuel and emissions savings from the three 24 meters high Rotor Sails installed on TR Lady.

4. Skuld precautions for fish farms in Lanshan, China. Recently, a vessel allegedly damaged aquaculture farms while navigating towards Lanshan no.1 anchorage. Despite warnings from the VTS via VHF and plotted coordinates on the ECDIS by the 2/O, the vessel inadvertently entered the fish farm area. Our local correspondent has informed us that such incidents frequently occur in Lanshan Port, with six incidents recorded in both 2023 and 2024.

7. BHP, Cargill and Rio Tinto seek new investors into RightShip. BHP, Cargill and Rio Tinto, the founders of shipping vetting organisation RightShip, have employed Rothschild & Co to seek new investors.

In a release, RightShip said its primary goal is to partner with an investor who brings not only capital but also significant expertise in data and technology and transformational growth.

8. Shanghai port pollution in the spotlight. A new study by Scope3 emissions tracking specialist VesselBot reveals that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at major global ports continue to rise despite technological advancements and sustainability investments. 

The report shows Shanghai port recorded the highest emissions (see chart below) at 140,000 tons, surpassing Singapore despite handling fewer vessels, highlighting that vessel numbers don’t directly correlate with emission levels.

9. Greek Court Charges 17 Coast Guard Officers Over 2023 Migrant Shipwreck. Greek naval court has charged 17 coast guard officers over one of the Mediterranean’s worst shipwrecks two years ago, in which hundreds of people are believed to have drowned, three sources said on Friday.The shipwreck of an overloaded migrant boat in international waters off the southwestern Greek town of Pylos on June 14, 2023, sent shockwaves across Europe and beyond. The naval court is still investigating the circumstances around the incident.

10. North Korea Detains Officials Over Warship Accident. North Korea has detained shipyard officials responsible for a recent major accident during the launch of a new warship, state media said on Sunday.The failed launch that crippled the 5,000-tonne warship was witnessed by leader Kim Jong Un who said the accident damaged the country’s dignity and vowed to punish those found responsible.
