1. Diversity’s ‘forgotten twin’ inclusion must be made priority in maritime’s journey to becoming a more welcoming and inclusive industry, says Columbia Group. Inclusion is every bit as important as diversity in ensuring that shipping becomes a truly welcoming, authentic and inclusive community, says Mark O’Neil, CEO of Columbia Group.

Mr O’Neil was a guest speaker at the TradeWinds Shipowner’s Forum on the third day of NorShipping and discussed how People ‘with a capital P’ must be made to feel valued, listened to and included. This is the key to a truly diverse and welcoming industry, he said.

2. Lloyd’s Register grants industry first full antifouling approval to Jotun’s Hull Skating Solutions. 

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded the world’s first Recognised Enhanced Antifouling Type Approval to Jotun’s SeaQuantum Skate antifouling coating, alongside type approval certification for the HullSkater hull cleaning equipment.

6. USTR Seeks Industry Input on Section 301 Maritime Trade Proposal Changes. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has opened a public comment period regarding proposed modifications to its Section 301 trade actions targeting China’s maritime sector dominance. The modifications, announced on June 6, 2025, focus on changes to vessel fee structures and LNG export licensing requirements.

7. Captain Cook’s Long-Lost Ship Confirmed in Newport Harbor. The Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) has released its final report confirming the discovery of one of maritime history’s most significant vessels – HMS Endeavour – in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island.

8. Britannia Group’s 2024/25 results affected by higher-than-usual retained and Pool claims. 

The Britannia Group’s result for 2024/25 is a deficit of USD9.8m, with what it calls a very disappointing combined ratio of 137.7%, materially driven by events outside the control of the Britannia Group.

10. BIMCO drafting standard clause to address US tariff measures. The world’s largest shipping association, BIMCO, has begun drafting a standard clause to address legal and contractual uncertainties stemming from recent US trade policy developments.

The move follows a notice of actions by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to impose new fees on vessels calling at US ports if they are Chinese-built, owned, or operated.
