1. INTERCARGO condemns attack on bulk carrier Magic Seas, calls for urgent action to protect seafarers. The International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO) has condemned the recent armed attack on the Magic Seas, a bulk carrier operating off the coast of Yemen. The vessel reportedly came under fire from small boats, according to a bulletin issued by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on 6 July.

2. Statement on renewed attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea. IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez has issued the following statement following recent attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea region:

“After several months of calm, the resumption of deplorable attacks in the Red Sea constitutes a renewed violation of international law and freedom of navigation. Innocent seafarers and local populations are the main victims of these attacks and the pollution they cause. Constructive dialogue is the solution to resolving ongoing geopolitical crises affecting seafarers and international shipping.”

3. Global eCommerce businesses operating in Saudi Arabia set to benefit as Maersk and Saudi Post enter a strategic partnership. Maersk Saudi Arabia and Saudi Post Company  announced the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding to establish a partnership aimed at strengthening logistics and supply chain services for eCommerce companies entering and operating in Saudi Arabia, as well as potentially in the broader GCC markets.

4. RINA Secures Major World Bank Project to Advance Green Hydrogen at the Port of Pecém, Brazil. RINA, the global engineering consulting, inspection and certification company, has secured a high-profile World Bank-funded assignment to help accelerate Brazil’s transition to a low-carbon industrial economy. RINA will deliver a comprehensive water assessment study for securing industrial water for green hydrogen production at the Complexo Industrial e Portuário do Pecém (CIPP), a flagship low-carbon development hub in Brazil.

5. Trafigura takes stake in ZeroNorth. The new partnership will see ZeroNorth’s platform deployed across Trafigura’s controlled fleet of over 350 vessels, including its voyage optimisation systems, emissions analytics and vessel reporting tools. While financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, the deal positions Trafigura among a select group of strategic shareholders in the Copenhagen-based tech firm—a group that already includes Maersk Tankers, Cargill, and private equity firm PSG Equity.

6. Hanwha Shipping bags third VLCC newbuild. Hanwha Shipping, the shipowning arm of South Korean builder Hanwha Ocean, has added another vessel to its growing in-house fleet, placing an order for an additional VLCC.The Okpo-based yard — formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) — is scheduled to deliver the 300,000 dwt scrubber-fitted supertanker in mid-2027.

7. Navios Maritime adds to South Korean boxship newbuild series. Greece’s Navios Maritime Partners is ramping up its exposure in the container shipping sector with a fresh order for four modern boxships at South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction.

The Angeliki Frangou-led company is understood to have signed for four 8,000 teu vessels, in a deal valued at approximately $440m, building on its prior orderbook at the same yard.

8. Surging UK Shipping Costs Threaten to Deliver a New Price Shock. The cost of shipping goods from China to the UK has surged due to ripple effects of the US trade war, threatening to push up consumer prices and complicate the Bank of England’s plan to keep nudging down interest rates.

9. Davie Acquires Finnish Steel Firm to Boost Icebreaker Production. Canada-based shipbuilder Davie has announced today an agreement to acquire Enersense Offshore Oy, a specialized steel and fabrication operation based in Pori, Finland. The acquisition will make Davie’s Helsinki Shipyard Finland’s only specialized shipbuilder with fully integrated capabilities from design to delivery.

10. Cartel Crew Sentenced to Prison Over Ireland’s Largest-Ever Drug Bust. Eight crew members from the bulk carrier Matthew have received prison sentences ranging from 13.5 to 20 years for their roles in Ireland’s largest cocaine seizure – a 2.2-tonne haul valued at €157 million ($166 million). The sentences mark the conclusion of a case that began with a dramatic military operation in September 2023.
