1. Lloyd’s Register awards AiP for 174K LNG carrier with Wind Challenger technology. Lloyd’s Register  has granted Approval in Principle  to Samsung Heavy Industries for the design of a 174,000m³ LNG carrier equipped with Wind Challenger, an innovative wind-assisted propulsion system  developed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, .  
2. From Serves to Smiles: Cyprus Shipping Chamber’s Beach Volley Tournament wraps up in Limassol. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber successfully concluded its annual Beach Volley Charity Tournament yesterday in Limassol, bringing together the shipping community for a day of sport, team spirit, and giving back to society.

4. HMM Signs 430 Billion Won Long-term Transport Contract with Brazil’s Vale. HMM announced on Sept. 12 that it has signed a 430 billion won long-term transport contract with Vale, Brazil’s largest mining company. This is the second contract following the 10-year long-term transport contract worth 636 billion won signed in May. The term of this contract is also 10 years, from 2026 to 2036, and HMM plans to deploy a total of five vessels to transport iron ore.

5. Mexico pushes 50% tariff on China-built cars. Mexico is preparing to more than double tariffs on cars from China and several other Asian countries, with duties rising from 20% to 50% under a proposal sent to Congress by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The draft bill, expected to pass given the government’s majority, would take effect 30 days after approval and cover about $52bn worth of imports from countries without free trade agreements with Mexico.

6. Adani turns away sanctioned tankers from its ports in India. India’s largest private port operator, Adani Group, has banned entry of tankers that are sanctioned by the US, UK or the European Union, according to multiple local media outlets. Adani’s port footprint in India is more focused on containers and dry bulk than tankers with analysts suggesting the news will not severely curtail Russian oil shipments into the world’s most populous nation.

7. Wan Hai 503 finds refuge in Dubai after 13-week odyssey. The long-stranded Wan Hai 503 has finally found shelter in Dubai, ending a 13-week saga.The 2005-built, 4,333 teu vessel had been at sea since June, unable to discharge or secure port access after a severe fire onboard. The ship, which is operated by Wan Hai Lines, had been forced to be towed across multiple anchorages, with crewing agencies expressing concern over the welfare of the seafarers onboard.

8. World’s first wind-assisted newbuild tanker arrives in Europe. Union Maritime, a leading provider of smart shipping solutions, has marked a major milestone for the sector with the maiden voyage of ‘Brands Hatch’, the first newbuild tanker installed with BAR Technologies’ WindWings®. On 8th September, the ship made her first European port call in Rotterdam.

10. Product tanker newbuilding contracting drops 86% to nine-year low: BIMCO
“Between January and August, product tanker newbuilding contracting dropped 86% y/y to 2.6 million deadweight tonnes (DWT) representing a nine-year low,” says Filipe Gouveia, Shipping Analysis Manager at BIMCO.
