Narrative:
UPDATE02: It was subsequently reported that the vessel was approached by one skiff, that closed to within 20 metres and opened fire. In response, the vessel’s onboard private armed security team (PAST) returned fire. The skiff subsequently ceased its approach and transited towards a reported mothership, located approximately 2NM off the bulk carrier. The vessel and crew were reported safe following the incident.

UPDATE01: A Palau-flagged bulk carrier was reportedly approached by armed perpetrators while transiting southbound through the Red Sea. In response, the vessel issued a distress alert stating that they were “under attack”. AIS data showed the vessel had previously departed Hudaidah at approximately 02:51 UTC on 05 July. The vessel subsequently transited southbound before AIS data indicated that it conducted evasive manoeuvres, altering course to port side, at 07:05 UTC, located approximately 27NM southwest of Hudaidah. The vessel subsequently ceased evasive manoeuvres at 07:21UTC. The vessel was in ballast condition, with an estimated freeboard of 3.26 metres at the time of the incident. At the time of writing, the vessel was continuing with its onward transit unhindered. No casualties or damage to the merchant vessel had been reported. Regional authorities were investigating the incident.

Ambrey is aware of an incident approximately 30NM southwest of Hudaidah, Yemen. Ambrey is investigating and will provide updates when available.

ADVICE: Merchant vessels are advised to report any unusual or suspicious activity. Vessels assessed to be vulnerable are advised to consider the use of private armed security teams.
