Narrative:
A Singapore-flagged bulk carrier capsized while in transit 55NM northwest of the disputed Scarborough Shoal, Philippines. The vessel, en route from Jingjiang, China to Yangjiang, China at a speed of 7kn, began to reduce speed at 12:25 UTC on 22 January. The vessel sent a distress call to the Philippine Coast Guard at 12:30 UTC. Based on AIS data, the vessel was last observed in the area of interest at 13:37 UTC. At the time of writing, the China Coast Guard had reportedly rescued 15 of the vessel’s 21 crewmembers. In addition, two other crewmembers had been confirmed deceased. Ambrey assessed the situation as ongoing and will provide updates when available.
